The Noguchi Museum Shop presents Stone Shadows「石影」, andesite sculptures by Mitsuo Saiki (b. 1975), a stonemason based in Nakanojo, Gunma, Japan.
Mitsuo Saiki grew up at the Saiki Shichiro Stone Masonry founded by his father, in an environment surrounded by stone, where “the sound of chisels still resonates” today. From the age of 18, he trained for five years under sculptor Akira Kato (加藤亮), honing his own style and hand-carving techniques, before returning to the family’s workshop. Today, with his brother, Riichi, and nephew, Kazuo, he creates traditional stone lanterns, tombstones, and Buddhist statues, and restores monuments and cultural properties.
