Akari 10D

Designed c. 1963
The Akari 10D is among the wave of new Akari light sculptures that Isamu Noguchi designed in the 1960s that were constructed with irregular (detarame) bamboo ribbing, an innovation of great pride to the artist. It also features mulberry bark washi paper and wooden collars (wa) on each side of its rounded form. The shade is secured to the three-legged metal frame, with a basswood crossbar suspended from black cotton string. The top of the frame is accented with wrapped bamboo.
