The Akari 25N is among the wave of new Akari light sculptures that Isamu Noguchi designed in the late 1960s. It features mulberry bark washi paper, evenly-spaced bamboo ribbing, and, as referenced in the copyright registration of its smaller variation, the 24N, a distinctive “three-tiered form,” set on four metal legs.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
