Akari BB1-YA1

Designed c. 1954/1977
The Akari BB1-YA1 pairs one of Isamu Noguchi's earliest designs for Akari light sculptures, a stone-like cast iron base and bamboo stem, with a shade designed over two decades later. For the YA1, Noguchi stripped away one of the essential aspects of traditional Japanese lanterns, bamboo ribbing (higo), leaving only mulberry bark washi paper. The lack of ribbing and folded construction creates complex textures on the surface of the form, which resembles a triangular antiprism.
