The Akari BB3-33S pairs two of Isamu Noguchi's earliest and most distinct designs for Akari light sculptures. It features a stone-like cast iron base and jointed bamboo stem, and an enigmatic shade composed of a pair of curved ovoid shades separated by a wide cylinder of lacquered wood. The shades are constructed from mulberry bark washi paper and wound with tight, evenly-spaced bamboo ribbing.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
