The Akari BB3-V2 pairs one of Isamu Noguchi’s earliest designs for Akari light sculptures, a stone-like cast iron base and jointed bamboo stem, with a shade designed over two decades later. It features mulberry bark washi paper, devoid of traditional bamboo ribbing (higo) and shaped into the form of a truncated pyramid. The lack of ribbing and folded construction creates complex textures on the surface of the paper.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
