The Akari UF1-O pairs one of Isamu Noguchi's final additions to the Akari light sculpture series, the UF ("unit/frame") stand, with a shade he designed concurrently. It features a four-paneled, asymmetrical form composed of mulberry bark washi paper: one plain panel, one red screenprinted panel, and two black screenprinted panels, with evenly-spaced bamboo ribbing throughout. The shade is set on four angled metal legs and secured with black cotton ties.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
