The Akari UF3-S pairs one of Isamu Noguchi's final additions to the Akari light sculpture series, the UF ("unit/frame") stand, with a shade he designed almost a decade earlier. Its distinctive mulberry bark washi paper shade features a hybrid of two shapes, globe and cylinder, made more unique by the presence of bamboo ribbing only on the globe form. The lack of bamboo ribbing (higo) and collapsible construction also creates complex textures on the surface of the cylinder form. The shade is set on three angled metal legs and secured with black cotton ties.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
