Akari UF4-L9

Designed c. 1968/1984
The Akari UF4-L9 pairs one of Isamu Noguchi's final additions to the Akari light sculpture series, the UF ("unit/frame") stand, with a shade designed about a decade and a half earlier. It features mulberry bark washi paper, and is constructed using minimal bamboo ribbing (higo), with a form resembling a column of stacked and truncated bipyramids. The lack of ribbing and collapsible construction creates complex textures on the surface of the form, which is set on four angled metal legs and secured with black cotton ties.
