The Akari UF5-32N pairs one of Isamu Noguchi's final additions to the Akari light sculpture series, the UF ("unit/frame") stand, with a shade he designed about a decade and a half earlier. It features mulberry bark washi paper, with a unique formation of irregular bamboo ribbing (higo) transitioning from more tightly-spaced at its ends to more widely-spaced at its center. The large swaths of washi allows for texture on the surface of its form – a long, wide cylinder with rounded ends. The shade is set on three angled metal legs and secured with black cotton ties.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
