The VB13-T is among the last Akari light sculptures that Isamu Noguchi designed, for the Venice Biennale in 1986, though the origin of its form dates back to the earliest years of the series. It features mulberry bark washi paper and irregular bamboo ribbing, and a distinctive form of a curved, truncated ovoid. It is set on four small metal legs.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
