This publication coincided with The Imagery of Chess Revisited (The Noguchi Museum, October 21, 2005–April 16, 2006).
Guest curated by Larry List, The Museum recreated and expanded the groundbreaking 1944 exhibition organized by Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York. In addition to Isamu Noguchi, the exhibition features original designs by artists such as Man Ray, Arshile Gorky, and Yves Tanguy. The catalogue explores Noguchi’s chess table and set from the mid 1940s, and more broadly, the relationship between modern art and the nearly 1,500-year-old game.
