The 1AS is a variation of the Akari 1A, one of Isamu Noguchi’s first designs for Akari light sculptures. It features screenprinted mulberry bark washi paper that alternates between black, striped, and plain panels, and tight, evenly-spaced bamboo ribbing, with a rounded form set on three metal legs.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
