The Akari 2X exemplifies some of the earliest advancements Isamu Noguchi explored in his Akari light sculptures, designed about a decade after the start of the series. Like most Akari, it features mulberry bark washi paper, but it was among the first to be constructed with irregular, widely-spaced bamboo ribbing, and to be set on four x-crossed metal legs, instead of three. Both traits show Noguchi deviating further from the qualities of traditional Japanese lamps.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
