The Akari 33NW is among the Akari light sculptures that Isamu Noguchi designed twenty five years after the start of the series, though its formal origin dates earlier, to the 1960s. It features mulberry bark washi paper and irregular, widely-spaced bamboo ribbing. The shade's wide, undulating form resembles the stacked triangular antiprisms of other Akari shades, but with organically curved lines between vertices.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
