The Akari BB1-30DL pairs one of Isamu Noguchi’s earliest designs for Akari light sculptures, a stone-like cast iron base and bamboo stem, with a shade designed over two decades later. It features mulberry bark washi paper and irregular (detarame) bamboo ribbing over a long rounded form.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
