The Akari BB1-30FF pairs one of Isamu Noguchi's earliest designs for Akari light sculptures, a stone-like cast iron base and bamboo stem, with a shade from the F series of spheroids, which originated over a decade later. It features mulberry bark washi paper and subtly irregular bamboo ribbing over an asymmetrical “fine spheroid” form.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
