Akari UF1-Y

The Akari UF1-Y pairs one of Isamu Noguchi's final additions to the Akari light sculpture series, the UF ("unit/frame") stand, with a shade he designed almost a decade earlier. For the Y shade, Noguchi stripped away one of the essential aspects of traditional Japanese lanterns, bamboo ribbing (higo), leaving only mulberry bark washi paper. The lack of ribbing and folded construction creates complex textures on the surface of the form, which resembles a triangular antiprism. The shade is set on three angled metal legs and secured with black cotton ties.
