This Akari 1AR Print represents half of the design that Isamu Noguchi created for the Akari 1AR, a variation of one of his first Akari light sculptures, the 1A (c. 1952–1954). Created by Ozeki & Co., the producer of Akari, the print features screenprinted red ink over mulberry bark washi paper (the same paper used to make Akari), as well as Noguchi’s signature in black and the Akari logo, a sun and crescent moon, in red.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
