Akari 1P

Designed c. 1968
The Akari 1P represents one of Isamu Noguchi’s radical departures from traditional Japanese lampmaking. He stripped away all bamboo ribbing (higo), creating a collapsible shade exclusively with folds and cuts in mulberry bark washi paper. Its unique form, likely based on Shinto headwear, is set on three metal legs, tapering from a circular base to a narrow, linear top, where a striking band of red tape provides reinforcement.
