The Akari 2P represents one of Isamu Noguchi’s radical departures from traditional Japanese lampmaking. He stripped away all bamboo ribbing (higo), creating a collapsible shade exclusively with folds and cuts in mulberry bark washi paper. Its unique form, likely based on Shinto headwear, is set on three metal legs, tapering from a circular base to a narrow, linear top, where a striking band of red tape provides reinforcement.

Akari are made in Gifu, Japan, an area known for its manufacture of paper lanterns called chochin. Akari are fabricated by Ozeki & Co., a family company founded in 1891 that specializes in traditional methods of making chochin lanterns. Ozeki & Co. have been manufacturing Akari since 1951.
